Sunscreen Summer

I finished my very last exam yesterday! (It didn’t go brilliantly but cheers for asking anyway) so today as I read in the news that prospects aren’t great (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8067289.stm) or that I should emigrate (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/8065615.stm) I thought I should finally embark on the idea I had 3 vulnerable years ago when credit crunch sounded like something you might get at Ben and Jerry’s. I am going to write a blog. Ok so it’s not novel and far from unique but I think it’s a way to broaden my horizons, right? No?  Well ok I’ll keep at it anyway. As I said in my first post I have been listening to a lot of depressing yet inspirational music during the last few months of student life. ‘Sunscreen’ by Baz Luhrman is one such song and 10 years down the line, as corny as it is I think it is, its pretty, pretty good. So instead of dwelling on recession depression I now hail this my Sunscreen Summer.  A summer when I take Baz’s advice (I don’t think it was his but we all know where the pay checks going right?) in an attempt to do something productive and not worry about what a possible 2 or 3 years of unemployment might do to my CV. So let’s have it Baz: well the core part of his advice is wearing sunscreen, cuz everybody’s free to apparently, if you can afford it that is.  Lets skip that Baz, what else?

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

Ok… So power and beauty of my youth…although according to Baz, I’ll never understand it till its gone. That’s today’s objective. Full on, self love. Ok that came out wrong…

Moving on, based on today’s objective I might rock my gladiator sandals. Gladiator sandals for men? Still unsure. Answers on a postcard or in comment box please.

So to wrap up. I intend to live my life for the time being to the gospel according to Baz. That’s my initial objective. Baby steps.

Long term objectives include getting out of my overdraft which brings me to my stats, which I will constantly update in my blog profile and let you know on twitter (www.twitter.com/2minute2minute4) if you’re interested that is. Let’s see how this goes shall we?

  1. Ok, so I am going to go ahead and be your first comment here too. I too have had my Baz Luhrmann Sunscreen moments, but I have to admit the song depresses the hell out of me. I remember it was in the charts and on the radio on a school hiking trip some ten years ago. I was mad about the guy sitting in front of me, but thought I would never be good enough for him. Despite being one of the 'cool' guys he told me some 6 or 7 years later that he was thinking the same thing. So, I guess I didn't enjoy the power and beauty of my youth then. Anyway there's my anecdote.

  2. Welcome to blogging. I hope your overdraft shrinks at an ever increasing speed. Congratulations on finishing your final exam!

  3. You have a very nice style of writing. Keep it up. I'm probably too old to know BazLuhrmann, but the idea comes through clear. And, yes, you won't appreciate your youth until it is gone...that's a universal dilemma of the human condition. As that great sage Anonymous once said, "Don't take life too seriously, no one ever gets out alive." Thanks for the Twitter follow. I'll follow back.
